Mar 08 2009, 11:07 AM
By Bampia J. Bundu, Times Newspaper in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Mar 3, 2009, 17:20 The 50/50 Group of Sierra Leone has launched the first 50/50 School Club at the Saint Joseph Convent Secondary School, Brookfields in Freetown. The well attended ceremony took place on Friday 27th February 2009. In her opening address, Founder and Ex-President of the 50/50 Group, Dr. Nemata Majeks-Walker commended pupils of the school for their relentless efforts towards the formation and launch of the club. The reason behind the establishment of the club, according to her, is to enable the girl child to learn about their roles and responsibilities at school stages. She added that by the time they will complete their education pursuit, they will be abreast with these roles and would be fully prepared to take up leadership positions in society. She ended by commending the founder and president of the St. Joseph Convent 50/50 Club, Kadiatu Kamara for her effort in kick starting the project. In her submission, Founder and President of the St. Joseph Convent School Club, Kadiatu Kamara mentioned that the inspiration of forming the club was derived from a 50/50 programme they attended in 2008 at the British Council Hall, Tower Hill in Freetown. She added that it is indeed a pride for their school to launch the first ever 50/50 club, reiterating that it will immensely help them to be abreast with their roles and responsibilities in society, vis-à-vis up keeping lively families and taking up leadership positions. Formally launching the club, President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Umaru Fofanah alerted members of the club to be steadfast as the task ahead of them is very challenging. According to him, the pupils are expected to sensitize colleagues in order for them to work as a concerted force. He encouraged the pupils to judiciously utilize what they would learn during the process, and advised them to be courageous in seeking leadership positions.
