Nigeria has boosted Sierra Leone’s ailing health sector through the provision of 10 medical specialists in various fields of study, under the banner of “South–South Health Care Delivery programme” to work and help revive some hospitals in the country. Speaking to journalists here Monday, Head of Sierra Leone’s Health Ministry’s Public Relations, Jonathan Abass Kamara, said the 10 Medical practitioners include Radiologists, Obstetricians, Dentists, Gynaecologists, Ophthalmic nurses, Midwives, Anaesthethesia, Optometry, Public Health and General Practitioners.

Presenting the team to Sierra Leone’s Health and Sanitation Minister, Dr. Soccoh Alex Kabia, Nigerian representative of the Presidency of the South-South Health Care Delivery programme and Director of Medical Services and Inspectorate, Dr. A . Usman, pledged its organisation's commitment to work dedicatedly to help improve the country's ailing health care delivery system.

Welcoming the team and its leader, Dr. Kabia said Sierra Leone was in dire need of help, particularly to meet its numerous health care challenges.

“The team's presence and assistance would go a long way in complementing government’s effort to improve the health care delivery system in the country," the minister said.

He said the continuous assistance received from the South–South Programme as well as the contribution Nigeria had been rendering to Sierra Leone towards the development of the health sector and other helpful areas were numerous and appreciable.

Dr. Kabia said he had no doubt in the professionalism of the team in relation to effective and efficient service delivery.

Under the South–South agreement, the host government will provide basic facilities for the personnel, while the country of origin bares the responsibility of remuneration.
