The Sierra Leonean Adventists Abroad (SLAA), is a UK registered charity (no 1085936) working to reduce poverty through improved health and better education in the worlds poorest communities. It operates in West African, in Sierra Leonean as a registered Non Governmental Organisation (NGO). It was founded by a group of Sierra Leonean Adventist university students in the UK in 1992, initially to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by war. SLAA jointly operates Masanga Hospital in Sierra Leone and runs education grant program for university and school students from poor background. We depend on donations to help others
SLAA is supporting phased restoration of Masanga Hospital, located in the centre of Sierra Leone in a region with a population of 360,000. The Hospital was serious damaged during the country’s civil war. Our objective is to create an efficient and self sustainable healthcare system that is accessible to all in an area of acute poverty. The out patient depart was re-established in 2006 in partnership with a Danish group, Association of Friends of Masanga (AFOM). Currently the clinic provides healthcare services in pediatric, maternity, general medicine and minor surgeries.
Illiteracy is a key cause of poverty and donor dependency in developing world SLAA’s education project is helping to eliminate illiteracy. We run university and school grant award schemes in Sierra Leone, where adult illiteracy is 55% for male and 82% for female. By providing sponsorship to students from poor background we help them realize their full potential and equip them to help their community out of poverty. Health and education courses are two of our target areas.
Motivated by our faith in Jesus Christ to serve alongside the poor and oppressed as a demonstration of God’s unconditional love for all people, we meet weekly on
